Richmond, Virginia has a long and storied history in the development of America. Settled briefly in 1607 by English settlers from Jamestown, the City of Richmond was not founded until 1737. Richmond served as the capital of the Colony and Dominion of Virginia, and during the American Revolutionary War the city was the site of several notable events including; Patrick Henry’s “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death” speech at St. John’s Church, and Thomas Jefferson’s Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, was written in Richmond in 1779. The American Civil War saw Richmond become the capital of the Confederate States of America and the site of many historic battles and events in the surrounding areas. In the modern era, The River City has distinguished itself as a major financial, legal and government center. Home to nine Fortune 500 companies as well as thirteen Fortune 1000 companies, Richmond is one of the twelve cities nationwide to host a Federal Reserve Bank.
